An Assessment of the Accuracy of Subsonic Linearized Theory for the Design of Warped Slender Wings

چکیده

SUMMARY A series of warped slender wings has previously been designed using the linearized theory of subsonic flow, as a basis for a systematic experimental investigation of the drag reduction obtainable by warp at low speeds. The force measurements on these wings have now been supplemented by measurements of the pressure distribution over one of them; and the pressure distribution on it has also been calculated for inviscid incompressible flow by a surface-singularity method. This Report compares the distribution of pressure used in the design with those measured and calculated for the design incidence, at which the flow was attached; and assesses the validity of the linear theory. The chief weaknesses are found to be on the thicker cross-sections near the apex, and towards the trailing edge where boundary-layer effects become significant.

The Calculation of the Warp to Produce a Given Load and the Pressures due to a Given Thickness on Thin Slender Wings in Supersonic Flow

According to the linearized theory of supersonic flow, both the local slope of the mean surface of a wing producing a specified distribution of lift and the pressure on a wing due to a specified distribution of volume are given as singular double integrals. The numerical evaluation of these is described for planforms with curved subsonic leading edges and supersonic trailing edges for the cases...

Determination of Dynamic Instability Speed of an Unsweep Wing in Subsonic Flow Including Compressibility Effects

In this paper, the equation of motion of an elastic 2 DoF wing model has been derived using Lagranges method. The aerodynamic loads on the wing were calculated via the Strip-Theory and the effect of compressibility was included. Wing deflections due to bending and twist motions were determined using the Assume-Mode method. The aeroelastic equations were solved numerically using the V-g method. ...

A Composite Finite Difference Scheme for Subsonic Transonic Flows (RESEARCH NOTE).

This paper presents a simple and computationally-efficient algorithm for solving steady two-dimensional subsonic and transonic compressible flow over an airfoil. This work uses an interactive viscous-inviscid solution by incorporating the viscous effects in a thin shear-layer. Boundary-layer approximation reduces the Navier-Stokes equations to a parabolic set of coupled, non-linear partial diff...

Flutter Analysis of a Low Aspect Ratio Swept- Back Trapezoidal Wing at Low Subsonic Flow

A linear, aeroelastic analysis of a low aspect ratio swept back trapezoidal wing modeled as a cantilever plate is presented. An analytical and numerical formulation for both the aerodynamic forcing and structural response of the wing was developed. The analytical model uses a three dimensional time domain vortex lattice aerodynamic method. A Rayleigh-Ritz approach has been used to transfer equa...
